Buyers and users of abrasives products often look upon them as commodities, purchasing them on the basis of price rather than considering them as part of a manufacturing process that can be measured with real-time data.  To help move abrasives purchasing decisions away from a product focus to a performance orientation, Saint-Gobain Abrasives (formerly Norton Company) and Ryan Wellnitz & Associates, organized a Grinding Technology Forum to showcase the Higgins Grinding Technology Center as a resource for technology integration.  The fully-subscribed event enabled the company to directly reach its primary target audience: major, large-volume users of engineered abrasives for technical applications.

..."Your facilitation of the Grinding Technology Forum was very effective.  The program planning, pre-program communication, the proceedings of the forum and follow up articles all served us well."

Saint Gobain Abrasives (www.nortonabrasives.com) introduced AVOS, a line of sandpaper disks with a revolutionary design. The disk’s triangular (versus customary round) shape and holes in the disk and mounting pad allow the operator to look directly at the surface during finishing operations.

The company allocated no advertising funds to launch the AVOS System, relying on editorial coverage to gain immediate awareness of, and interest in, the new product.

Construction Industries of Rhode Island (CIRI) is an association of transportation-infrastructure contractors – the companies that build, maintain and repair the state’s roads, highways, and bridges.  The November 2002 ballot in Rhode Island carried a referendum authorizing the state to borrow $63.5 million via a bond offering for highway and transit improvements, which, in turn, would bring $360.8 million in federal matching funds.  If voters rejected the bond offering – and there was significant opposition to incurring such significant new debt – the federal matching funds would go to other states, and Rhode Island would be unable to afford needed maintenance and repair.

CIRI retained Ryan Wellnitz & Associates to conduct an advertising and public relations campaign in support of the bond referendum.  The result: 72.5% percent of voters supported the bond referendum (50 percent plus was needed).
